Dangerfield Jackal and Viper lock pick cases

Twenty-three pockets: seventeen individual tool pockets, five more on a fold-out panel for your turners, and a roomy full-height zip pocket for more turning tools or a practice lock, all inside a wallet that is 2.5 cm (1 in) across the spine and lives in a jacket pocket. The pockets are a generous size in a hard-wearing fabric: bare-metal picks, slim Dangerfield handles and most rubber grips slide straight in. Olive Viper, tan Jackal, or both.

Why buy this

Loose picks are how good tools get ruined

Picks rattling around in a bag come out bent, scratched and blunted at the tip, and the one you want is always at the bottom. A tip that has been mangled against a set of keys stops reading pins properly, so you end up blaming your technique for a problem the carry created. Give every tool a pocket of its own and that whole category of frustration disappears.

Tips stay straight

One pocket per tool means hooks, rakes and half-diamonds are never grinding against each other, so the profiles you paid for stay the profiles you bought.

Roomy pockets, tough fabric

Every pick gets a pocket of its own in a hard-wearing fabric, so the tips are kept apart instead of rubbing together. A very slim pick can shift a little in its pocket, and the wider pockets on the fold-out panel take chunky Peterson grips with plenty of rubber.

Small enough that you carry it

At 2.5 cm (1 in) across the spine it goes in a jacket pocket, a glovebox or the lid pocket of a rucksack. A case you leave at home organises nothing.

Inside the case

Twenty-three pockets, laid out flat

Unzip it and the case opens flat, so the whole layout is in front of you rather than buried. This is where the Jackal and the Viper earn their price against a plain zip pouch: the storage is layered, and every layer has a job.

Dangerfield Jackal lock pick case open flat and loaded: picks in eight pockets either side of the spine, one in the spine, and tensioners in the five fold-out panel pockets 5 fold-out 8 left 1 spine 8 right The full-height zip pocket on the back of the fold-out panel1 zip pocket

  • 8 rightRight of the spineThe matching row. Sixteen individual tool pockets between them, which is a full pick set with room to keep growing.
  • 1 spineIn the spine itselfThe bit most cases waste. Good for one more pick, or a couple of tensioners kept where the thumb lands.
  • 5 fold-outThe fold-out panel, wide and narrowMixed sizes, built for the turner collection: TOK and BOK wrenches, twisted strips, flat Z-bars, plus any picks that have outgrown the main rows.
  • 1 zip pocketFull height, behind the panelFold the panel back down and its reverse is one spacious zip pocket, made for the rest of your turning tools or a practice lock, so the whole practice kit travels together.
Choose your case

Olive, tan, or both

The Viper and the Jackal are the same case in two colourways at the same price, so this comes down to which one you would rather pull out of a pocket. The interior backing panel is colour-matched to the shell on both, and so is the paracord pull: green cord on the Viper, black on the Jackal.

Dangerfield Viper lock pick case closed, olive green fabric with black binding, woven Dangerfield label and a green paracord zip pull
Viper £24.99Olive green

Olive shell, olive interior panel, green paracord pull. The greener of the two, and the one that disappears into outdoor kit.

Add the Viper
Dangerfield Jackal lock pick case closed, tan fabric with black binding, woven Dangerfield label and a black paracord zip pull
Jackal £24.99Tan

Tan shell, tan interior panel, black paracord pull. Identical layout, in a colour that reads as a document wallet rather than kit.

Add the Jackal
Dangerfield lock pick case open flat and loaded, picks standing in the individual pockets with tensioners in the wider pockets
Both, save £9.99 £39.99Instead of £49.98

Forty-six pockets across two cases. Split the kit by job: standard picks and turners in one, dimple, tubular or car tools in the other, and carry only the case the lock needs.

Add both cases
Dangerfield lock pick case loaded with a full row of picks standing in the individual pockets, seen from above
What fits

A full set, the turners, and the awkward extras

The internal length is 14 cm (5.5 in), so standard hooks, rakes, half-diamonds, bogotas and the usual run of tensioners all lie flat with room to spare. The sixteen main pockets are all the same generous size, so every pick in a normal set goes in any pocket you like. Peterson picks with a lot of rubber on the handle are the bulky ones: slot those into the wider pockets on the fold-out panel.

Load it the way you work. Most people fill the rows left to right in reach order, keep the turners on the fold-out panel where the thumb finds them first, and use the spacious zip pocket for the overflow: the rest of the turning tools and a practice lock. Once the layout is muscle memory you stop looking at the case at all.

Anything longer than 14 cm (5.5 in), such as a full-size tubular pick or a Lishi decoder, wants a bigger case. Filling this one from scratch? Start with individual picks so the set suits your hands, then add a spread of tension tools, since the turner is what most first attempts are missing.

Build

Made to be carried, not just stored

Water-resistant outdoor fabric

A tight woven EDC-grade shell that shrugs off rain, wet grass and a damp boot lid. Water resistant rather than sealed, so treat it as a jacket, not a dry bag.

Reinforced bound edges

Every border is bound and reinforced, which is exactly where a soft case usually blows out first. It holds its shape in the hand instead of folding round your tools.

Chunky moulded zip and paracord pull

A heavy moulded plastic zip runs round three sides, with a knotted paracord pull you can find and yank with cold or gloved hands.

Questions

Quick answers

How many picks does it hold?

Seventeen in the individual pockets, eight either side of the spine plus one in the spine itself, and five more on the fold-out panel. Add the zip pocket and that is 23 pockets in all. That comfortably covers a full set with room to keep adding.

Will bulky Peterson handles fit?

Yes, with a little planning. The main pockets are a generous size, so bare-metal picks, slim Dangerfield handles and standard rubber grips go in anywhere. Peterson picks with a lot of rubber on the handle fit the wider pockets on the fold-out panel.

Which is the olive one, the Jackal or the Viper?

The Viper is olive green with a green paracord pull. The Jackal is tan with a black pull. Same case, same price, same layout inside.

Does it come with picks?

It comes as the case on its own, which is the point of it: you choose what goes in. Fill it from individual picks and tension tools, or move a set you already own out of the case it shipped in.

Where do the tensioners go?

On the fold-out panel, which mixes wide and narrow pockets for exactly that: TOK and BOK wrenches, twisted strips and flat Z-bars. The spine pocket takes a couple more if you like them close to the thumb, and the zip pocket has room for the rest of the collection.

Is it waterproof?

It is water resistant, not sealed. The outdoor fabric and the moulded zip shrug off rain, wet grass and a damp boot lid. Do not treat it as a dry bag for a river crossing.
